Full-Time Process Engineer
Job Description
Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients. We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. We are seeking a highly motivated Process Engineer to purify various flavors, fragrances, and natural organics from fermentation-based processes using distillation techniques and related support systems. Deep understating of thermodynamics, kinetics, and analytical chemistry is required. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This person will be expected to play an integral part of Manus Bio’s process development team located in Augusta, GA.
Responsibilities:
- Distillate multicomponent organic mixtures for flavors, fragrances, and natural organics through operation of distillation equipment, including Solvent Extraction, Wiped Film Molecular Distillation, Fractional Distillation, etc.
- Uses analytical equipment (GC-FID or GC-MS) to determine compositions of mixtures, evaluate efficiencies of distillation, and assess the quality of distillation cuts and final products
- Produce experimental samples to enable testing of developed products, and coordinate outside testing trials to ensure results are received in a timely matter to meet project timelines
- Keep abreast of current literature and techniques in distillation technology and their potential application to Manus Bio’s internal projects
- Support development of blends with superior senatorial properties
- Analyze, write up, and present experimental results to others in the company to expedite the development of our integrated product development in a collaborative team environment
- Maintain all necessary production, safety, inventory, training, and other records and/or logs as required, in written and /or computer format.
- Modify processes to increase yields whenever possible
Required Qualifications:
- B.S. degree or higher in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry or a related discipline with 5+ years of experience in the flavor and fragrance industry
- 3+ years of proven-experience in experimental chemistry (organic and analytic)
- Extensive knowledge and experience in equilibrium separations (particularly in fractionation)
- Skill in the operation of distillation and support equipment as well as equipment troubleshooting and maintenance
- Knowledge of piping and valve operations to control processes
- Good understanding of analytical techniques (GC) and fermentation bioprocess is desirable
- Experience in flavor and fragrance industry within a creative function is a plus
